Range Rover Electric makes more sense than it sounds

The Range Rover Electric is one of those ideas that sounds less exciting the longer one says it, until the purpose of a Range Rover comes back into focus. This luxury SUV has always been built around silence, isolation and making effort feel optional, so becoming an electric car seems less like sacrilege than a logical next step. It remains an off-road SUV with a formidable reputation, but near-silent propulsion could suit that character more naturally than it suits many performance-led electric vehicles. There is still something faintly strange about removing the distant thrum of an engine from something so imposing, yet this may be the big 4×4 best placed to make the change feel entirely normal.
Why the Range Rover Electric fits the brief
Range Rover has resisted the predictable temptation to make its first full EV look radically different, and that restraint is welcome. The current model is already among the cleanest shapes in the luxury SUV world, so redesigning it merely to advertise the presence of batteries would have been change for its own sake.

As someone who has owned a Range Rover, I think the silhouette is a large part of its appeal. The upright proportions, simple surfaces and tidy rear treatment remain intact, with the electric car distinguished by an aerodynamically optimised grille, different wheels and a tailored underbody rather than a design revolution.
That approach matters because too many electric vehicles still appear styled around the novelty of electricity itself. Range Rover’s apparent thinking is more sensible: make it a Range Rover first, then let the electric hardware do its work without shouting about it.

The figures beneath that familiar bodywork are considerably less restrained, with two 260kW permanent-magnet motors producing up to 405kW and 850Nm. Range Rover claims a 0-100km/h time of as little as 4.5 seconds, although the point of the Range Rover Electric is surely not to turn every traffic-light departure into a small event.
More relevant is the way electric power should reinforce the traditional Range Rover character. Instant torque, no gear changes and little powertrain noise ought to make creeping through car parks, towing, climbing and long-distance cruising feel even more effortless in an off-road SUV already defined by its ability to flatten the world outside.

Silence could be the greatest luxury SUV upgrade
The slightly silly thought prompted by the technical material is that an electric Range Rover feels, figuratively at least, as though it has almost infinite wading depth. It plainly does not, because batteries, seals and electronics still have limits, but the official 900mm wading rating means this off-road SUV remains serious about water rather than merely looking good near it.
There is something pleasingly neat about a vehicle built to cross rivers no longer needing an engine to breathe while it does so. That does not make the electric car amphibious, but it removes one old mechanical anxiety from the mental image of a Range Rover disappearing steadily into deep water.

The more useful technical story is the traction management system, which Range Rover says can control motor speed within 50 milliseconds and manage slip up to 100 times faster than an equivalent combustion system. Single-pedal driving can also assist on slopes of up to 45 degrees, suggesting electrification could improve the precision of an off-road SUV rather than simply add weight and complexity to it.
That is where the Range Rover Electric becomes more convincing than the usual EV performance pitch. Precise motor control has genuine value on wet grass, loose rock and steep climbs, whereas another novelty drive mode would be little more than infotainment for people who never leave the bitumen.

The battery has 118.5kWh of usable capacity, an 800-volt architecture and DC charging capability that can take it from 10 to 80 per cent in around 22 minutes under ideal conditions. Range Rover claims up to 600km on the NEDC cycle and a real-world estimate of up to 535km, with the latter figure more meaningful for a large luxury SUV intended to cover serious distances.
Australian pricing starts at $317,718 before on-road costs for the HSE, rising to $357,718 for the Autobiography and $417,418 for the SV. Order books are open, while the electric car will sit alongside combustion and plug-in hybrid versions rather than replace them outright.

I am not going to pretend the phrase “electric Range Rover” stirs the same part of the brain as a supercharged V8 model. Yet a Range Rover is meant to be quiet, effortless, capable and visually understated, and if the Range Rover Electric preserves those qualities while improving refinement and traction control, it may make the original idea clearer rather than dilute it.
