Introducing The Manic Cars Dream Garage: Our new take on Car of the Year

Forget the usual Car of the Year awards. We’re building our ultimate dream garage, and we’re filling it with our favourite new cars of 2026.
Every year, automotive publications around the world crown their favourite cars. There are awards for performance, practicality, innovation, value for money and just about everything in between. But here at Manic Cars, we thought we’d do things a little differently.
Introducing The Manic Dream Garage, our new annual celebration of the cars we’d most like to own.

The concept is simple. Imagine being handed the keys to an empty garage and being told you can fill it with any of the new cars released over the past year. Money is no object, practicality isn’t always a priority, and you’re free to choose whatever takes your fancy.
What would you put in it?
That’s the question we’re setting out to answer.
How does The Manic Dream Garage work?
Rather than choosing one overall winner, we’ll be putting together a collection of cars that we’d love to have at our disposal, each selected for a particular purpose.
There might be a comfortable grand tourer for an impromptu trip across Europe, a sports car for an early Sunday morning drive, an SUV for everyday duties, or something completely outrageous that we’d struggle to justify owning.

For every car we select, we’ll explain why it deserves a place in our garage, where we think it would shine, and exactly how we’d use it.
After all, the appeal of a dream garage is having the right car for every occasion.
And while there are plenty of exceptional cars on the market, there are only so many spaces in our imaginary garage.
What makes a car eligible?
Naturally, we need a few ground rules.
To qualify for The Manic Dream Garage 2026, a car must have entered retail sale in at least one market during the 2026 calendar year, either as an entirely new model, a new generation of an existing vehicle, or a substantially updated version.
Significant facelifts and new performance variants are welcome, provided they bring meaningful changes to the driving experience, engineering, technology or overall character of the vehicle.
A new paint colour, revised badge or slightly different set of wheels isn’t going to cut it.

We’re also keeping the selection open to vehicles from around the world. A car doesn’t necessarily need to be available in Australia to earn a place in our garage.
And once a car wins a place in The Manic Dream Garage, it can’t simply return the following year unchanged. Each annual edition will welcome a fresh selection of contenders, although substantially revised models and new generations will be eligible to compete again.
Do we have to have driven it?
Here’s where we’re taking a slightly different approach to traditional automotive awards.
Throughout the year, we’ve had the opportunity to get behind the wheel of some extraordinary cars. Those experiences will naturally play an important role in our decisions, but we’re not limiting our selections exclusively to vehicles we’ve personally driven.

We’ll also be considering cars we haven’t yet had the opportunity to experience firsthand, looking at their design, engineering, specifications, character and what they bring to the automotive world.
Where we have driven a contender, we’ll draw on our own experiences. Where we haven’t, we’ll make that distinction clear.
Ultimately, this is an exercise in choosing the cars we’d genuinely love to own, rather than pretending we’ve road-tested every vehicle on the planet.
What about the cars we wouldn’t want in our garage?
Of course, it wouldn’t be much fun if we only talked about the cars we love.
Alongside our dream garage selections, we’ll also be taking a look at some of the new cars that we wouldn’t particularly want taking up space in our garage.
These might be cars that left us disappointed after getting behind the wheel, models that haven’t quite lived up to the hype, or vehicles that simply don’t make a particularly compelling case for themselves.
And that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re bad cars. Some might be objectively excellent, but we’d still rather spend our imaginary money on something else.

We’ll explain what puts us off, where we think manufacturers have missed the mark, and what we’d choose instead. As with our dream garage contenders, we’ll distinguish between cars we’ve driven and those we’re assessing from afar.
After all, knowing what you wouldn’t put in your dream garage can be every bit as interesting as knowing what you would.
So, what’s going in the garage?
That’s what we’re about to find out.
Over the coming weeks, we’ll be looking back at the year’s most interesting new arrivals, revisiting some of our favourite driving experiences and putting together shortlists of the cars we think deserve a place in The Manic Dream Garage.
We’ll also be identifying a few that we’d happily leave outside.
Some choices will be sensible. Others will be completely irrational. There will undoubtedly be a few difficult decisions, and perhaps a couple of controversial ones.
But that’s part of the fun.
Our inaugural Manic Dream Garage will celebrate the cars that have captured our imagination in 2026, with each winner earning its own place in our ultimate collection.
Now, we just need to decide what deserves the keys.
