Princess Diana remains one of the most recognisable public figures in modern history, and more than 30 years after one of her most famous appearances, a car connected to that moment has sold for £66,250. The vehicle, a royal car used by Princess Diana during the mid-1990s, recently crossed the block at a UK car auction. While collectors often chase a classic Jaguar for its design, history, or rarity, this example offered something that very few vehicles can claim. That combination of celebrity provenance, royal history, and classic Jaguar appeal helped make the car auction result one of the most closely watched sales of the year.

The Princess Diana appearance that made this car famous
When Jaguar delivered the vehicle to Princess Diana’s household in March 1994, it became part of the royal fleet. Like many vehicles assigned to royal duties, the royal car spent much of its time transporting Princess Diana between charity visits, official engagements, and public appearances.
At the time, the classic Jaguar itself attracted little attention. The focus was always on Princess Diana, whose every movement generated headlines around the world. The royal car quietly carried out its duties while photographers concentrated on the woman sitting in the back seat. That changed on 29 June 1994.

Earlier that day, Prince Charles publicly admitted to marital infidelity during a televised interview. Hours later, Princess Diana arrived at a Vanity Fair fundraising event at London’s Serpentine Gallery wearing the black dress that would become known around the world as the Revenge Dress.
As photographers gathered outside the venue, Princess Diana stepped from the royal car and into what would become one of the defining images of the decade. The photographs were quickly distributed around the world, appearing on newspaper front pages, magazine covers, and television broadcasts. More than three decades later, images of Princess Diana arriving that evening remain instantly recognisable.

Unlike many celebrity-owned vehicles that appear at a car auction with little more than an ownership claim, this royal car has a clear and documented connection to a specific historical moment. Photographs and footage place Princess Diana and the vehicle together on one of the most important nights of her public life.
The connection extends beyond that single evening. Historical records show Princess Diana using the royal car for several public engagements, including visits to the Royal School for the Blind and appearances at Brown’s Hotel in London. Each documented appearance further strengthens the vehicle’s place within the story of Princess Diana and her final years as a public figure.

Why bidders saw more than a classic Jaguar
Without its royal connection, the vehicle would still be a desirable classic Jaguar. Interest in the Jaguar XJ40 has grown steadily in recent years, with enthusiasts increasingly recognising its significance within Jaguar’s history.
This particular classic Jaguar arrived at the car auction with impressive documentation. Service records show maintenance carried out by Jaguar dealers, including work completed by the Kensington dealership responsible for servicing vehicles connected to Kensington Palace. For collectors, provenance of that quality is often just as important as condition.

The condition of the royal car also helped attract attention. According to the auction listing, the cream leather interior remains exceptionally well preserved, while the wood veneer trim still presents beautifully despite the vehicle’s age. The original Motorola phone remains fitted inside, providing a reminder of the era in which Princess Diana used the vehicle.
Several physical details continue to separate this royal car from a typical collector vehicle. The roof still shows evidence of fittings once used to mount the Royal Standard, a small but significant reminder of the car’s former role within the royal fleet. Details such as these help transform a classic Jaguar into a genuine historical artefact.

The seller purchased the vehicle from the royal fleet in February 1997, just months before the death of Princess Diana. Since then, the royal car has reportedly spent much of its life stored in a heated garage, preserving both its originality and relatively low mileage.
When bidding closed, the car auction had reached £66,250. That figure represents serious money for a classic Jaguar, but buyers were never simply competing for a luxury saloon. They were bidding on a royal car connected to one of the most famous photographs of Princess Diana ever taken. In a collector market filled with celebrity stories and disputed claims, this car auction result stood out because the connection to Princess Diana is documented, visible, and immediately recognisable.
